Kacey Lange

Kacey graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry from Mississippi State University in 2020. She then joined the M3EL lab that same year as a MSc in Marine Science.

Exploring optical properties of marine microbes

The Master's student Kacey Lange is using field samples collected from the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico to explore the potential for viruses to contribute to the optical backscatter of dissolved matter in the ocean.

In the spring of 2021, Kacey joined the Export Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) team in the North Atlantic Ocean. During this expedition, Kacey used a Nanolive 3D Cell Explorer to measure the refractive index of different marine microbes and their cellular components.

Kacey's research is a collaboration between M3EL and Dr. Xiaodong Zhang at USM.
